    Work in an occupied building

W.G. Clark’s Special Projects Group was hired to build out this boutique office space in an occupied building. The offices serve as the main headquarters for Gravity Payments, a credit card processing and ecommerce company. Seven unique spaces were designed within a total of 22,897 SF, covering the second and third levels of a five-story mixed-use building in downtown Ballard. The shell and core work was also completed by W.G. Clark.

The project essentially involved building out seven separate tenant improvements within one space, bringing the eclectic Main Street design concept to life. Individual areas were built to resemble storefronts that would be seen on a typical Main Street, USA, such as a barber shop, bike shop, restaurant, and candy store, reflecting the company’s ties to their client base. There was no such thing as a “building standard” or typical design with this concept. Varying finishes and extremely detailed designs and angles dominated almost every aspect of the work. We led the effort in providing many mockups of the finishes and spending hours researching materials to help Gravity Payments envision how the space would meet their goals.

The construction schedule was critical to the success of the project, as the tenant had a hard move-out date from their existing office space and could not afford a single day of downtime. Many design elements were not fully developed at the beginning of the project, and excellent project management was required to finalize details and keep to the schedule.

Despite the complex designs, mid-stream changes and dealing with a heated marketplace where labor shortages were commonplace, we turned the project over with time to spare.
