Smith Tower Voluntary Retrofit

Originally completed in 1914, Smith Tower is one of Seattle’s most iconic historic landmarks and a defining part of the city’s skyline. W.G. Clark was selected to complete a voluntary seismic retrofit that strengthens the building while preserving its historic character and supporting continued tenant operations.

The project included the installation of 18 seismic dampers across nine floors of the occupied, 42-story tower. Work was performed within existing tenant spaces and required careful demolition, structural coordination, framing modifications, finish restoration, and close collaboration with the project team and building operations staff.

Because Smith Tower remained occupied throughout construction, much of the work was completed overnight to minimize disruption to tenants and daily building activity. The team carefully sequenced work in active office areas, maintained clean and safe access, and restored affected spaces to match existing conditions.

Through thoughtful planning and precise execution, W.G. Clark helped strengthen one of Seattle’s most recognizable historic buildings for the future while respecting the craftsmanship, character, and ongoing use that make Smith Tower such an important part of the city.
